How to Apply for Admission

  • Download an application here or call 804/627-5408 to receive an application through the mail.
  • Submit completed application, application fee and completed application materials before the deadline posted for that application period.

Candidates must meet the following minimum academic requirements for consideration.

All pre-application courses must be from a regionally accredited college with a minimum grade of "C" and a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5. GPA is calculated from pre-application courses only.

Credits must have been earned within 10 years of application date.

Bon Secours St. Mary's Hospital School of Medical Imaging makes selection of applicants without regard to race, religion, color, national origin, sex, disability or age.

Acceptance into the Radiography program does not guarantee employment upon program completion.

Basic Application Requirements

  1. Submit completed application (with $50 fee) postmarked no later than the posted deadline for desired application cycle (See application period above.)
  2. Candidate must meet minimum physical technical standards (essential functions) to be considered for acceptance. (See below)
  3. High School diploma or GED equivalent. Submit official documentation.
  4. Complete ALL pre-application courses prior to application deadline and submit transcripts.
  5. Pre-application courses must calculate to a GPA of 2.5 or higher.
  6. All pre-application courses must be from an accredited college and be taken within 10 years of application date.
  7. Minimum grade of "C" is required for all pre-application courses.
  8. Submit 3 Letters of Reference.
  9. Include a copy of your BLS (Basic Life Support) card for Healthcare Providers from the American Heart Association (AHA). Contact Health Educators for CPR certification: 804-553-0460.
  10. All misdemeanor or felony offenses must be reported regardless of how long ago they were committed. ARRT (www.arrt.org) pre-approval is required to be eligible to apply.
  11. Attend an information session offered though the School.
  12. Observation/shadowing must be scheduled through the School for a minimum of 2 hours at a Bon Secours facility. (Call 627-5408 to schedule.)
  13. Await notification of qualified applicant status or decline status.
  14. Candidates meeting the criteria above will be scheduled for a personal interview and to take an admission test.

Candidate files that do not meet all criteria by application deadline will not be included in the admissions process and will be automatically declined.

Qualified Applicant

Admission process for applicants who meet basic application requirements by deadline

  1. Take an admission exam on a scheduled exam day (Applicants will be notified of appointment by phone or email). The admission exam assesses: human anatomy and basic math. A written autobiography is performed once testing is complete and must be written at that time.

    Friday, June 29th, 1:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m.
  2. Await letter of decline or acceptance into the program. (Any acceptance is contingent upon successful completion of requirements established by Bon Secours Richmond Health System including proper immunization, drug screening, background screening and further required documentation.)
  3. Accepted applicants must be 18 years of age on the first day of class.
  4. Accepted applicants must provide and maintain proof of health insurance.

Acceptance Process

  1. Undergo background and drug screening*
    Upon successful completion of step #1, the applicant will proceed with the following:
  2. Undergo physical exam*
  3. Receive required immunization*
  4. Show proof of major medical insurance (not available through the school)*
  5. Purchase textbooks, clinical shoes, and uniforms prior to program start*

* Asterisks indicate out of pocket expense that is not covered by tuition.

*Applicants whom background check demonstrates a misdemeanor or felony and has not received approval from the ARRT, will be denied admission.

Admission Decisions

  1. Qualified applicants are assigned points for each component of the application process: personal interview questions, autobiography, admission exam, and GPA of pre-application courses. Admission is based on that numeric rank.
  2. Strong grades in pre-application courses and good performance on the admission exam are very important to the numeric score.

Minimum Physical Standards (Essential Functions)

Accepted applicants are required to sign a form stating that they can meet the following standards.

The following physical requirements must be met by students entering the program.

  1. Hearing: Adequate to receive verbal communication from patients needing assistance and from members of the health care team.
  2. Communication Skills: (speech, reading, writing) Must be able to communicate clearly to patients, fellow students, faculty and all members of the health care team.
  3. Vision: Requires eye sight correctable to 20/20 to operate radiographic equipment and read information from printed sources and computer screens. Visual acuity is also required for the observation necessary for patient assessment, care and management.
  4. Gross and fine motor coordination: requires manual and finger dexterity and eye-hand coordination for operation of radiographic equipment.
  5. Other: Requires frequent lifting and carrying items weighing 50 pounds unassisted. Requires frequent bending, reaching, repetitive hand movements, standing, walking, squatting and sitting, with some heavy lifting, pushing and pulling exerted regularly throughout a regular clinical day.


The student must verify by signature that he/she can perform the physical requirements/essential functions listed above. A Registered Nurse signature is also required for verification. These processes will occur during the acceptance process (See acceptance process #2 above).
