For the fourth year in a row, Bon Secours St. Mary's Hospital has been named among the top hospitals in the nation, and the only one in central Virginia, for inpatient cardiovascular services by Truven Health Analytics, an industry leader in health care data. The 50 Top Cardiovascular Hospitals is an annual, quantitative study that identifies the nation's best providers of cardiovascular service. Selected from more than 1,000 U.S. hospitals, these winners provide top-notch care and set new standards for the health care industry.

St. Mary’s Hospital has been named for superior clinical outcomes, a recognition based on a comprehensive and objective review of public data and peer-reviewed methodology. The study, in its 14th year, singled out 50 top hospitals among hospitals that treat a broad spectrum of cardiology patients.

"It’s an honor to be recognized for our commitment to excellent cardiovascular care,” said Marc R. Katz, M.D., a cardiac surgeon and the chief medical officer of the Bon Secours Heart & Vascular Institute. “Our patients benefit from a full range of treatment options, from medical management to cardiac rehabilitation and wellness programs.”

The study found that if all cardiovascular providers performed at the level of this year’s winners, including St. Mary’s Hospital, nearly 8,600 additional lives and more than $1 billion could be saved. Additionally, winning hospitals:

  • Spend approximately $3,500 less per bypass surgery case;
  • Have significantly better 30-day survival rates;
  • Maintain lower 30-day readmission rates for heart attack and heart failure patients; and
  • Release bypass patients nearly a day sooner than their peers.

"Bon Secours is committed to leading our peers in setting new standards of excellence in cardiac care,” said Toni R. Ardabell, CEO, Bon Secours St Mary’s Hospital. "We are especially proud to be recognized by Truven for the fourth year in a row for superior clinical outcomes in cardiac services."

With more than 40 physicians, surgeons and specialists, the Bon Secours Heart & Vascular Institute comprises seven hospitals spanning central and eastern Virginia. The H&VI is known particularly for its minimally invasive valve surgery – the only program in Virginia to perform mitral valve repair surgery robotically – and for its work with ventricular assist device (LVAD) implantation. St. Mary’s Hospital is recognized nationally for its LVAD program utilizing the HeartMate II for treatment of heart failure.

In addition to recognition from Truven, the Bon Secours Heart & Vascular Institute has been recognized for excellence by HealthGrades, Premier, United Healthcare and the American Heart Association.
